Road Avenger

Take on a road gang with your turbo-charged sports car in this anime-infused cinematic driving game from Data East.

Overview Road Blaster, not to be confused with the Atari game RoadBlasters, is a full-motion video combat driving game developed and released by Data East for arcades on August 1985.
Set in a near-future 1990's U.S.A., Road Blaster puts players in the role of a member of the elite police force S.T.O.P. (Special Task Operations Police, known in the Japanese version as the Special Car Police, or S.C.P.), who seeks vengeance against the gang S.C.U.M. (Secret Criminal Underground Movement, known in the Japanese version as the R.R.R.) after an attempt on his life during his honeymoon drive kills his wife instead.Similar to most other LaserDisc-based arcade games of the time, Road Blaster is a cinematic game in which players are given actions to perform in a short amount of time, which in this case involves rotating a steering wheel controller left and right and two pedals (one for braking, and one for turbo boosting). Other than special cinematic moments, most of the game is played in first-person from the driver's seat of the protagonist's LX-5 modified sports car. Similar to Data East's earlier game Cobra Command, the game was developed in co-operation with Toei Animation, who produced the hand-drawn animated video.Ports & Re-ReleasesThe game received multiple home conversions throughout the years:It first received a Japan-exclusive "VHDpc INTER ACTION" release in 1986 by Victor for the MSX and Sharp X1, both requiring a connected VHD videodisc player. It then received a release on the Japanese Video Challenger VHS-based toy console in the late 1980's, switching from driving to shooting targets in a single sequence. It later received a Sega CD port by Wolf Team in 1992-1993 as Road Blaster FX, where it was also released overseas as Road Avenger. It then received a Mega LD release by Data East in 1995, where it was also released overseas as Road Prosecutor. It received a Japan-exclusive Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn release in 1995 by Ecseco, bundled with Cobra Command as Thunder Storm & Road Blaster. It received a PC release by Jitensha Sougyou in 2009.It received a iOS release by Revolutionary Concepts on January 15, 2011.
