It later received a Windows PC release on March 1999 and a Sony PlayStation release (ported by Appaloosa Interactive) on September 30, 1999.The first game based on the Comedy Central adult animation of the same name, and running on the same engine as the studio's Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, South Park puts players into the role of kids Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny as they deal with various weird problems due to a comet flying close to South Park, Colorado.Acclaim later followed up with the party game South Park: Chef's Luv Shack and the kart racer South Park Rally. A handheld Game Boy Color puzzle-platformer adaptation was also being developed, but was then instead re-tooled for other licenses as Maya the Bee & Her Friends, The New Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley, and Mary-Kate & Ashley: Get a Clue!GameplaySouth Park plays like a traditional first-person shooter, with some unique twists:In the single-player mode, players switch between each of the four kids at any time, each of which have their own "Mood" gauge (which can cause them to leave the group if taking too much damage) and limited weapon slots. Each kid can only carry up to two weapons at a time.Along with standard "Minion" enemies, the game includes larger "Tank" enemies that often drop Minions over time. In addition, some levels have a Penalty Round mechanic where if a Tank reaches the town, the player is taken to a stage where they must defend downtown South Park from an onslaught of enemies (which deplete a Town Damage Bar, causing a game over if it is empty). The game supports the Expansion Pak for high-resolution graphics (including a letterboxed widescreen mode).Power UpsCheesy Poofs - Restores 10% healthSnack Cakes - Restores all healthBeefcake - Enables InvincibilityMr. Hanky - Turns you invisibleZipp! Its secondary function toggles having character peeing on their snoballs (turning it yellow), which causes splash damage when thrown at the cost of a slower throwing rate.Dodge Balls are also thrown, but can bounce off of walls and enemies alike and can be caught and re-used. Its secondary function toggles a bouncier, more powerful throw.Toilet Plunger Launcher is a device that launches toilet plungers that stick to enemies and surfaces, where they can be re-collected. Its secondary function launches three plungers at once in a horizontal spread, like a shotgun.Sponge Dart Gun is a hand-cranked toy gun that launches sponge darts at a rapid pace. Its secondary function allows it to be cranked multiple times for a more powerful foam missile.Terrance & Phillip Dolls are thrown "gas grenades" that create damaging clouds of flatulence. Its secondary function toggles between Phillip dolls (which explodes on impact) and Terrance dolls (which explodes on proximity).Warpo Ray is a ray beam that, by default, launches swarms of deadly piranhas instead. Its secondary and tertiary functions fire ray beams at differing strengths (yellow and purple). In multiplayer, yellow beam kills shrink the opponent to death and purple beam kills transform them into an animal.Super Sniper Chicken is a chicken with a featherless butt that is used to launch eggs from its rear at a powerful velocity. Its secondary function toggles a "zoom" for longer-ranged sniping.Cow Launcher launches a powerful explosive cow. It has a targeting reticule, and launching it against a "locked-on" enemy causes it to aim directly on top of them (which, if it directly impacts certain enemies, it gets the victim's head stuck up the cow's butt for a guaranteed kill before exploding). It has no secondary function.Alien Dancing Gizmo is a multiplayer-only device that emits waves that cause opposing players to dance uncontrollably for a short time. Its ammo cannot be replenished and its secondary function places it on the ground as a proximity mine (which emits a wave blast based on its ammo count).StagesThe game is split into five "episodes" of 3-4 stages each, each of which have their own unique assortment of enemies. Each episode starts with all weapons removed and with the boy chosen at the start of the game as he finds the other three.Episode 1 - Operation: Turkey ButtThe boys encounter hordes of mutant turkeys.Faire GameTurkey ShootSearch and DestroyHomecomingEpisode 2 - A Clone of Your OwnThe boys encounter hordes of imperfect clones of Big Gay Al, Jimbo, Ned, Officer Barbrady, and Dr. Mephisto. There Goes the NeighborhoodWarehouse RunMother Lovin' SpoonfulEpisode 3 - Close Encounters of the Bovine KindThe boys encounter hordes of frenzied cows and alien visitors. The Visitors ReturnThe Road to CratervilleOne Mother of a ShipBlow the CoreEpisode 4 - Something Wicked This Way ClunksThe boys encounter manic robots.Seismic RumbleMilitia Camp MadnessNuts and BoltzEpisode 5 - Some Disassembly RequiredThe boys encounter killer toys.Toy RampageParking ProblemBatteries IncludedMultiplayerThe game includes simple free-for-all deathmatch multiplayer, both with four-player split-screen (console version) and LAN/Online (PC version).CharactersBase RosterCartmanKyleStanKennyUnlockableMr. MackeyOfficer BarbradyBig Gay AlNedStarvin' MarvinPhillipTerranceMr. GarrisonChefWendyPipIkeMrs. CartmanMephistoJimboAlienLevelsThe RavineDugoutThe HillNeighborsCrater FortSplash TowerCabin FeverBadlandsThe DamBadlands 2WarehouseUFO CoreGym ClassThe PlantToy StoreFactoryWare WarTrivia Acclaim's CEO at the time Greg Fischbach announced a direct sequel to the game intended to be released sometime in 2000. However apart from this small nugget of information the game was never released and no further details were ever known. There was Game Boy Color version of the game being developed, apparently it was cancelled because the show's creators did not believe the platform was the right demographic. Only one screenshot has been released to the public.
