A major revision to the original OutRun 2 (Game), OutRun 2 SP features a completely revamped course, with locales based more on North America (rather than Europe), along with several new gameplay updates (including the "slipstream" mechanic, a revamped "rival" system, and the "15 Continuous Course", in which players can challenge themselves to clear all 15 sections in order). It also reworked vehicle stats and included an Internet-based ranking system. An updated revision, known as OutRun 2 SP SDX, was released in December 2006.
It received a home release for the PlayStation 2 (Platform), Xbox (Platform), and PlayStation Portable (Platform) in Europe on March 31, 2006 and in North America on April 25, 2006, with a PC (Platform) version released on June 27, 2006. Ported by Sumo Digital and released as OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, this version features a revamped car roster, both the original and SP courses, online multiplayer, and a revamped challenge mode (known as "Coast 2 Coast") with new unlockables. The PS2 version received a Japanese release on February 8 2007 as OutRun 2 SP. The Xbox version was later made backwards compatible with the Xbox 360. The PC version also received an online release via Steam (Concept), before being delisted on October 2010 due to the licensing contract with Ferrari expiring.
It received a second home release on April 15, 2009 for the Xbox 360 (Platform) and PlayStation 3 (Platform) as downloadable titles, both under the name OutRun Online Arcade. Based on Coast 2 Coast's "OutRun 2 SP" arcade mode, this version features high-definition graphics and online multiplayer. The PS3 version was delisted on October 2010 and the 360 version was delisted on December 2011, both also due to an expired licensing contract with Ferrari, with no way to legally acquire them.
